Artists’ residences serve as working and social venues for cultural workers from all over the world in the visual arts, crafts, literature, music, theatre, dance, performance and curation. They provide studios, workshops and spaces of communication of various kinds, as well as accommodation for artists in residence. The sponsorship of the residences is usually held by societies of supporters or foundations. Public funding provides financial support for their various tasks to various degrees.

Far beyond their original purpose of fostering artists, artists’ residences are interfaces between art and society. They provide public spaces for social and cultural exchanges on site. Through the Network of Artists’ Residences in Northern Germany, the potential of these national and international scholarship providers  and production sites is made visible and better used.

The Network of Artists’ Residences in Northern Germany was established in 2018. It is intended to serve an exchange of experiences, as well as the development and implementation of joint projects and the representation of common interests. Its aim is not only to increase the public presence of the participating houses, but also to create a mutual perception and networking among the participating institutions.

Detailed information on the individual programmes, their orientations and activities, and on application procedures for the different grant programmes can be found on the websites of the respective institutions.
